1999 300M -steering squeak!

My 300M has 65000 miles on it, has given fairly good service. Now has a loud squeak when turning the steering wheel (left and right) - = does not seem to be the belt, the power steering reservoir is full and = no leaks??? Would appreciate areas I might check which might get rid of = the squeak. Thanks in advance... Ralph Griffith

not seem to be the belt...

That's most likely what it is. A '99 with only 65,000 miles on it? If that's the original belt, you should replace it (and the a.c. belt too) whether it is the problem or not due to age. Also - replace the tensioner pulleys for both belts. The bearings on those do go bad and make noise (and have been known to lock up).

You doing other maintenance on it, like replacing the coolant (G-05 only)? It's also overdue it not done already.

There have been reports of more than a couple of rack failures on the various LH-specific car forums. I don't recall any being preceded by squeaking noises. The posts I recall mentioned the rack simply locking up with little or no warning.

Also, if the noise is not belt or tensioner pulley-related, sometimes it is found that replacing the p.s. fluid with ATF+4 will quiet things down.

But don't assume anything I've said - just make sure your rack isn't getting ready to fail. I don't mean to lull you into a false sense of security if it is more serious than belt, tensioner, or fluid needing replacing.
