'96 LHS check engine

1996 Chrysler LHS - check engine light is on

From reading around, I turned the ignition key on 3 times to get the blinks code.

I got: 1 2 7 2 5 5 -- but I don't know what the 1272 means, just that the 55 is the end. I looked around some sites that gave OBD diagnostic codes, but the 1272 didn't show up anywhere.

I'm also reading that there are some places that might hookup to the computer and read and provide for me the actual stored computer diagnostic information without charge.

Or, what is the best approach to this problem?

I have a Chilton manual for the car. It has a section called Driveability & Emission Controls which has a table full of diagnostic codes expressed in hex, MIL, generic scan tool, and DRB scan tool -- where MIL stands for the check engine light on the dash and PCM stands for Powertrain Control Module and DRB stands for Diagnostic Readout Box.

I can't make enough sense of the information I'm getting from the manual. It says 12** indicates the battery being disconnected and 72** indicates L front catalyst efficiency failure. Sometime last year the battery was disconnected, but that was a very very long time ago, there have been much more than the 50x on-off ignition switch cycles the manual says are needed to clear the computer of a diagnostic code that no longer prevails.

I don't know about the cat efficiency code information. About 3 months ago I replaced one cat because it had pieces rattling around in there that caused concern that the junk might plug the exhaust system and I was going to be traveling to Mexico and was worried about breakdown.

Don't worry about the code 12 as this is also a start of codes as well as battery recently disconnected. The one you need to worry about is the 72 which is indicting your left catalytic converter. Which one was previously replaced? I've never experienced this code before, but know that others on this group will have some thoughts since I would think this could also be caused by several other issues and not just a bad catalytic converter.

OK.

I can't recall perfectly, but it seems that it was the L one which was replaced. I found the receipt for the work, but it doesn't say the side. Tomorrow I'll give Eddie a call and see if he can remember.

How about the question about whether or not there is some way to get a 'real' readout from the computer instead of just the blink codes?

You need an OBDII code reader ... The blinking codes was a huge asset that they stopped doing sometime around 1999 or 2000.
