97 Cirrus Problem, Need Help

Sorry for the long post, just trying to be as detailed as possible.

I have been having issues with 97 Cirrus, which has around 84K miles on it. Friday I drove home from school which is about 3 1/2 hours away, no problems. But later that night I was out and I went to make a right turn and the steering wheel locked up, the engine died, and I was unable to push the brakes in hardly at all. I forced the brakes down as much as I could so the car finally stopped, put the car in park, and started the car. It took just a little longer than normal for the car to roll over. Once I had the car started I was able to drive about 5 blocks made a left turn and drove 2 more blocks. I went to make a right turn again and experienced the same symptoms I mentioned earlier. Once again, I re-started it and everything was fine again.

Next morning when I went to test it, I experienced the same issues everytime I turned or had to come to a complete stop. This lasted for about 5 mins, go-stop, restart the car, go-top, restart the car etc. but then after abotu 5 mins. all the symptoms were gone again. No problems for the rest of the day Saturday. No problems at all Sunday. I drove back to school tonight without any problems at all until I got into town and had to turn right at a stop light. Then the car shuts down and I experience the same symptoms again. I had already been through numerous lights on the trip and had made numerous right turns as well.

It?s really bizarre. I replaced the altenator one year ago. All of my belts are fine. I?m wondering what the hell could be wrong. Might I have a short in the steering column? Of course when this happens all the lights on dash pop up, oil, check engine etc.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Unless someone else chimes in who is more familiar with the car, I would say time for a major tune up. Vacuum hoses, throttle body and AIS/IAC cleaning plugs and wires, EGR valve, etc. Also check the power steering pressure switch (if it has one) that tells the computer when you turn the wheels so it can compensate for the increased load on the engine. You didn't say which engine the car has.

" Sorry for the long post, just trying to be as detailed as possible" The engine size was left out!!!

Either way it sounds like you have a wire shorting out someone on turns, I would suggest a scan tool to read the inputs and outputs to the PCM
