PT Cruiser MPG

My new 2006 PT Cruiser Touring Edition with the regular non turbo 2.5l engine was giving me about 23 mpg highway after about 500 miles of use.

I also wasn't sure if the automatic transmission was shifting properly.

I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes to reset the transmission shift pattern. During that time I drained out the factory loaded motor oil and refilled with 5w-30 Mobil 1 synthetic. I reconnected the battery and took it for a run thru small city traffic, then took it out on the interstate for a 25 mile cruise at 65 mph. So far I am seeing about a 2 mpg increase.

That's interesting. I have a 2001 Limited that gets just over 24 mpg. Wonder if that would work for me?

Actually, the PT Cruiser tends to rev. low.

PT Cruiser (non-turbo)

150 hp @ 5100 RPM 165 ft-lb torque @4000 RPM

PT Cruiser GT (turbo)

230 hp @ 5100 RPM 245 ft-lb torque @ 2800 RPM

Compare it to it's nearest competitors:

Toyota Matrix

164 HP @ 7600 RPM 125 ft-lb torque @ 4400 RPM

Chevy HHR

143 HP @ 5600 RPM 150 ft-lb torque @ 4000 RPM

More fuel economical cars:

Honda Civic 1.8L

140 HP @ 6300 RPM 128 ft-lb torque @ 4300 RPM

The PT Cruiser GT gets a lot of torque (245 ft-lb) at > Just guessing, but could the engine be running in a higher rpm range than
