Why are distributor #'s so important?

I have a 1940 Chrysler Royal, 241.5 six, and am wondering why the distributor # is so important in getting the correct points, condensor, rotor and cap? I have checked NAPA and Echlin makes a generic set for old flathead engines. Would these work? Or do I need the specific ones for the engine?
