NEW YORK - As master of a transatlantic corporation, Dieter Zetsche expected to battle Ford Motor, General Motors and navigate the tangles of American law. But the incoming chief executive of DaimlerChrysler likely didn't envision those tangles involving the police--or imagine his wife being charged.

Gisela Zetsche, 54, was called to court after being charged in what cops say was a party lousy (lousy?) with underage drinkers. According to a police report, law enforcers in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Township, Mich., cited complaints called in late June 18: complaints of noise, drinking and people throwing things at passing vehicles from the Zetsche home.

According to The Associated Press, the police report said that Frau Zetsche claimed she merely bought beer for the 19th birthday party of a young man who was living with the family for the summer. But the bulls said they found some 100 people at the party; many ran away, but officers stopped about 30 of them and found ten more hiding in closets. In total, 20 underage drinkers were ticketed.

Police found two beer kegs--one already a "fallen soldier"--as well as margarita mix and six empty liquor bottles. Mrs. Zetsche had been slated to appear in court Thursday, but that hearing was adjourned until Sept. 13. She faces a $500 fine if convicted of the charge of having an open house party. Her attorney did not return calls from the AP seeking comment.

Dieter Zetsche has been credited with turning around the U.S. arm of the firm. Last month, he was named to replace Juergen Schrempp as the CEO of Earth's No. 5 automaker (Earth's ? Why not "the Galaxy's" ?). So, with the future and the tabloids in mind, he can be gratified that that none of the charges or the tickets given out had the initials DWI.
