Hi Jeff - Have you tried GSF?

There's one on Cutler Heights Lane between Leeds & Bradford, close to the top of Wakefield Road in Bradford.

You don't say which make alternator, but I have found that several auto-electrical specialists will stock regulators, though I must admit I have not looked recently. Last time all I wanted was a pair of brushes, but I had to buy the regulator as well as it was all one part. As you can get exchange units, the parts must be available. Certainly the fault you describe points to the regulator, but it "could" just be a broken wire in the sensing feed to the reg. which would possibly be inside the unit.

Don't know where you are, but have you looked in your local Yellow Pages under Car Electrics. Just done a search,

Brian ( snipped-for-privacy@tesco.net) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

I dunno about the GSF one, but a 2cv one certainly won't fit - 2cvs use an external VR, whereas the AX uses one built in to the alternator.

thanks for the advice guys so looks like the best avenue for me now is to get the I.D numbers off my alternator and get in touch with gsf guy on that forum said £19 for a reg/brush assy which is less than my local scrappy wants for a bosch one off a 106 1.1 (he wants £30 btw)
