Citroen Xsara stutter

Hi,

Got a '99 Xsara 1.6 VTR, about two months ago the "K" light (?!) came on without any performance side effects, a day later the mid-section of the exhaust broke off and was replaced, at which point the K light went out again, a few days later the K light came back on, the car seemed to loose power and occasionally stuttering/misfiring, took it to a local garage who interrogated the onboard computer which indicated some intermittent fault with cylinders 2 & 3, the garage replaced the injector header unit and cleared the faults, this appeared to solve the problem for a week or two but then the K light returned... Back to the garage, they said it was the same fault and adjusted the connection to the header unit, this time the fault returned quicker, again back to the garage, this time they replaced the connection plugs (presumably to the header unit?), again the fault returned and has been in this state for the last week. The stuttering/misfiring is worse when the car is working hard, going up hills, accelerating, but does do when idle.

Has anyone else had anything similar or got any suggestions?

Thanks! Gary

Hello Gary.

I own a '99 Xsara 1.8 VTS and i havent heard anything like that before. A friend of mine got a '98 VTR and he havent either heard of anything like that. Sad to hear you have problems like that and the issue realy sounds strange. Hope you find a solution for your problem and when you do you post it here. :)

Fuel pump.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did consider the fuel pump, not being particularly car minded, would that affect all the cylinders or just the two indicating a problem?

Thanks! Gary

Thanks for the reply,

Yeah, sure is a mystery, I've not found any other references to anything like this and the garage (a Citroen specialist) seem a bit stumped.

It's in today to have the coil replaced, I can't guess if that will help but will let you know.

If it's a mechanical fuel pump, driven by the cam-shaft, then it will always be going through the same phase of it's operation when each cylinder is being injected, regardless of engine speed, so if the pump has a fault that coincides with cylinder one, then that would look like a problem with that cylinder. Certainly worth having a mechanic take a look.

Thanks very much for the information, yes I now see how this could be the case.

As I mentioned in one of the other messages, the garage went ahead and changed the coil(s), on my old car i'm fairly sure the coil was a single thing whereas on this model it appears to be divided into a single unit containing 4 small ones. Anyway, they sounded fairly confident it had been fixed, the fault certainly hasn't returned in the last 3 days, but time will tell I guess so fingers crossed.

Thanks to everyone who replied... Gary

Hi,

I also have similar (annoying) problem with my ´99 Xsara 1.6. K-light went on and car sometimes stutter. Fault code indicates that there is a momentary shortcut in cylinder 2 & 3 injector headers. I have tried to replace injector headers with no luck.

Did the replacing of the coils help?

Thanks,
