FS: 1972 Rover P6 V8 Auto, 3 owners, 30k-something miles

Much as I hate to do this, some recent changes in my circumstances mean that I finally had to admit to myself that I'd never have the time to both work on and enjoy all my four-wheeled toys, so I'd rather see them go to a good home.

So, with a very heavy heart my Rover P6 is for sale.

Good points:

- It's a three owner car, two long term owners and myself who bought it in October last year. The previous owner was an enthusiast who hardly ever used the car - the MOTs that come with it prove that it's done a few hundred miles or less between MOTs, so the mileage (which is currently around 32k) is entirely believable. Plus, it's the first Rover V8 I've encountered that doesn't sound cammy...

- Plain V8 auto with power steering. Unfortunately it's Mexico brown..

- It's MOT'd until June, taxed (it's tax exempt by the way) until September of this year.

- Comes with most of the original paperwork, handbook and original Rover workshop manual.

- Recent service, partially done by me and partially by a Rover specialist in North London.

Bad points:

- It needs a good service and going over, as all this standing around hasn't done it any good. Everything works apart from the interval wiper, though.

- There's a bit of bubbling on one of the front wings around the side light.

- The rubber seals on the side windows need replacing, new ones come with the car.

- The interior. *Sigh*. The seats need refeeding and colouring, plus personally I'd stick a new carpet in. There's also a minuscule hole in the passenger footwell that will need sorting out.

Not a lot when you read it, but having zero spare time - hey, I don't even get to drive it - means that it'll take me about five years to get the above jobs done :(.

Car is located in North Finchley (London), asking price around GBP1100 but offers will be considered. Email adress is valid, so mail away...

this is Timo you're on about, Dave.. He's a bit legendary for his "lack of luck"...

Dave Plowman was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:

Well, sample size was around ten - the number of P6s I looked at before buying this one.

Eight of them were making slight to severe noises from the cam, none of them had had a rebuilt engine, though.

The cam is certainly one of the first thing to wear out on a Rover V-8, but mainly through lack of oil changes, poor oil and lack of use. It's a pretty straightforward job to change the cam and tappets, and not that expensive either. However, it's best to check the cam for wear before replacing it - you might well get away with just new tappets which makes the job much easier. FWIW, a gently driven example will suffer from noisy tappets long before a hard driven one.

Coincidence... I'm considering a Rover P6 as a daily runner. To cut a story short, my wife has decided she likes my newly acquired '87 BMW so she's taken that, leaving me with her Volvo that I don't want. So, I'll sell it and buy an older car.... looking at Rover, Mercedes and the wildcard - FE Ventora.

Timo, would this Rover honestly do a low mileage daily driver? Any idea of the average fuel economy on an urban run? If it's a good car and really needs little or no work bar regular maintenance I'd be very tempted.

There's the small issue of my being in a different country to you, but there isn't much choice in Ireland so I'm considering travelling for one. Only car of interest here is a 2000TC (still on UK plates, asking for around ?2000).

Oh, and would I get a BW66 'box in the boot of the Rover (Alan Deane, you still around!)

You fancy a drive to Pembroke? Sean

Sean, whereabouts are you? I'm in Leitrim and I know of a Corsair not far from me for sale. I haven't looked at it closely, just driven past it a few times. There's also a Merc at the same place but I don't think it's moved for a good while. If it tickles your fancy, e-mail me off list and I'll give you the location.
