Italian Job done as fan resolves 40-year-old cliffhanger of classic movie

It is one of the most memorable cliffhangers in movie history ? what happens to Michael Caine's gang of robbers at the end of The Italian Job.

The closing moments of the 1969 film has the British crooks in high spirits as their bus careers along an Alpine road. Then it skids, and is left teetering over a cliff ? with the gang at the front and their stolen gold bullion slipping to the back.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Rob saying something like:

What a lot of unnecessary drivel.

The gang would press themselves hard against the windscreen and Croker would crawl to the nearest ingot and throw it to the front, rinse and repeat.
