MG B : Noise on rear axle

Hello,

My 1972 MG B GT has a problem on the rear axle : when accelerating, I get a "clang" sound like if somethimg was loose.

The differential is probably OK because there is no particular noise when cruising. The primary axle is OK too. I beleive the connection between the rear axle and the differential is worn.

Is this usual? If so, can I assume that I should simply change the axle (hoping that it wears out faster than the differential)?

Thanks for any advice on this kind of problem. Excuse my poor knowledge in technical English.

(1) Check the propshaft flange bolts are tight. (2) Check propshaft universal joints for wear. (3) Check spring U bolts are tight and axke is properly located on the spring. (4) Check damper and anti roll bar links for exccessive waer. (5) Examine springs for broken leaves

And check the sliding yoke at the front of the shaft

and make sure if you have wire wheels they are tight and full of grease.

But my prognosis is that the Uni joints need replacement - dry broken rollers etc. in which the noise will travel through the tail shaft giving a tinny crunching noise when fully loaded on acceleration.
