Oil Change.

The SD1 was well past it's annual oil change date - although well within the mileage limit. So decided to get it done this week, as I'm off. But the weather hasn't been too good, and I'm also getting too old to crawl around on the street in the damp. :-)

So remembering a National ad, I phoned them up. About 20 quid they said, using Duckham's semi synth.

So I went round to the branch. No filter in stock, despite saying they had on the phone. And wanted 45 quid. Now it only takes 5.5 litres, so which car costs less than half that to do?

Went to Kwik-Fit. 27.95 for Mobile 10-40 semi synth. And they found an fixed a broken exhaust hanger - admittedly just a rubber ring - for free.

And they seemed happy to let me watch them doing it all.

Many knock them, but I've got nothing but praise.

Balham branch, by the way.

I had a rant at the manager in our local National Tyres depot once for a similar reason. I needed some cheapest budget tyres for a car that was on its last legs. The local paper had come out that morning with an ad from National listing the size I wanted for 18.95 or something. There was a large sign on their forecourt showing the same price, but guess what, they didn't have any of that brand left. So they'd sold out within two hours of the ad appearing in the paper. Not just that size either as they were giving another customer the same run around.

I went to my local quikfit and walked away very impressed ! 70 quid for new discs, pads, exhaust check, brake test and all in a hour on a Sunday without any notice. In fact apart from the name (thick as Sh*t fitters) I would be happy to recommend them.

Some years ago, I rang a local garage that boasted cheap tyre prices. I wanted 4 commercial van tyres for an Escort. I was given a good price and a couple of hours later arrived to have them fitted. I queried the bill after I'd paid, as it was about £20 less than I'd been quoted over the phone. "Oh you were lucky" he said, "about 10 mins after you rang the tyre rep came in, and told us that those particular tyres had been reduced in price" I said "that's a bit stupid. I'd already agreed to the original price". "That's just the way we work" he replied. That's the first time I've ever paid less than the agreed price to a garage. A nice surprise though. Mike.
