Porsche 924 heavy steering

Hi I have an '81 Porsche 924, the steering is very heavy what's the most likely cause of this. it's not power steering. Also could do with a replacement exhaust so can anyone recommend a good parts supplier in Uk, online would be great, but any one that would deliver parts.

The great lump of an engine sitting over the wheels? Rear engined Porsches can get away without assistance, but not the 924, unless you're used to this sort of feel.

Does it feel notchy - or, is the reistance the same for a complete 360 degree turn of the wheel?

For spare parts try:-

German, Swedish and French

These people do a stainless steel exhaust system for the 924, but cheap it ain't.

. . and finally, this outfit is a specialist Porsche breaker and also supply some new parts.

No it's not notchy, just bloody heavy for the whole turn. Heavier than other 924's I've driven, so I do have a comparison. Tyres are correct pressure and not particularly wide with good tread. I also get a slight smell of fuel when I throw it around - I suspect its the pipe leading from the filler inlet to the tank but havent checked yet. Oh and the fuel pump is a bit noisy, but my audi was like that for years so I'm not over concerned.
