Recommendations for classic car insurance wanted

Any one know somewhere good for this? For a Ferrari, I would want agreed value, not many miles a year. I have a trade policy, but that is only up to 10000 pounds (not enough) and would probably get out of any claims somehow.

Go and buy a classic car magazine, any classic car magazine.

Look in the back of it.

You will find pages of ads for classic insurance.

Ring some. If they're abysmal to deal with on the phone, they'll probably be worse in a claim.

I haven't bought a car mag for at least twenty years !! I think it was car and car conversions.

I'll have a look in Smith's tomorrow.

Practical Classics is probably your best bet.

I've never had to make a claim but Footman James seem decent enough. I can't always get through on the phone (busybusybusy) but they answer my emails quickly and efficiently and their postal system seems to be on the ball.

You will probably need an independant valuation from a club official for a vehicle worth more than £10,000

For a Ferrari, I'd have thought Catsick & Sprotscart would be better.

Most people will suggest Footman James, but I was unimpressed when I called them - their data on my car was completely wrong.

I've been with AON for some years. 1966 E-Type (OK, not Ferrari league), three named drivers, unlimited mileage, business use, agreed value and only to be repaired by my nominated restorer, not a local bodyshop. Less than £300pa. And I've just made my first claim - vandal damage - and they paid up without question, although I did everything wrong when I made the claim - that delayed the payment a bit, but they added interest! Pretty impressive, I thought.

Surely not, Dave? Aren't they more Cortina types? For Ferrari I would think Classic and Sports Car a better bet. Although I suppose most of the advertisers use both - haven't checked.

Bad form to follow up my earlier post, I know, but my experience with FJ did not inspire confidence. When I rang for a quote on my 1966 E, they asked if it was auto (not an option in 1966), then insisted it must have been modified as it has a 4.2 engine (original - all numbers match) - their information was that it should have been a 3.4 (which was never an option). Didn't feel inclined to trust my toy to them as their telephone answerer clearly had little or no knowledge of the type of car they claim to specialise in.

Drifting a bit off-topic, as I usually do, in 1970 or thereabouts I spoke to a number of brokers to get cover on my Ferrari 250 GTE (well, it was just an old heap then). I was about 25 years old, a freelance advertising photographer, living in Chelsea. Not the best risk in the world. Most of them turned me down flat, with varying degrees of hilarity. But one wonderful lady said "Don't worry, it could be worse" When I asked how, she said "Well, you could be blind as well". I stayed with her company for more than 30 years, placing huge amounts of company business with her. Just shows how important the initial contact can be.

I was with them for a few years, and have just moved away, because they're useless.

VERY picky about what they would and wouldn't cover, slow on sending paperwork, lost plenty of paperwork, typical call centre with script readers not people that actually know about insurance.

Perhaps that's why they only charged me 13quid to add my Minor to my Vitesse's insurance. Suits me just fine!

Strange. I've found the reverse to be true. So far they've never failed to get the paperwork to me by the next day.

I've never found them slow or inefficient. My cars are all low insurance risks so they're not picky, and three cars insured for a tad over a hundred notes suits me fine.

Maybe their post room just hates me?

They refused to even consider the 4x4 2cv, even with an engineer's report - "It's modified, we don't insure modified cars" - and they refused to offer even occasional commuting use on the Acadiane - "It's a commercial vehicle" - although they were fine with that on the other 2cvs.

They were cheap, but not that cheap for me.

They wouldn't insure the Visa first time of asking - "not a classic" (shuttup). Second time I tried, they were happy with it, considering what the rest of them are. Worth asking a second time - as you say, the phone operators are a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.

Three hundred and something quid, I think - six cars, agreed value, fully comp, no mileage limit, no modern car.

(But about fifty notes on a separate policy for the Velosolex)
