U registered cars

As I was going to Warwick on Friday, I saw a newish looking Audi TT that appeared to have a U registration. The number was GMN544U. Now, as far as I know, U was never used as a suffix letter for registration years, but the Audi was RHD and the numberplates where of the new British type and did not appear to have been fiddled with. I also can't find any trace of the vehicle on the AA and DVLA registration search sites.

Any ideas what was going on? Is it foreign, or commonwealth? It was certainly strange.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Howard Rose saying something like:

Isle of Man?

Yes, the MN area suffix denotes Isle of Man. They didn't have the same rules as mainland UK in that you can't derive the year of issue from the U suffix. Used to always be MAN prefix but changed to xMN at some point, also started the 'reverse' registrations (A123 MAN) long before we did.

Since the original post, I've seen loads of them around. I wonder if the price of the ferry has just dropped?

Like when there was a massive influx of cheap used RHD cars from Sweden in the early 70s? There were some bargains to be had then.
