Red herring, I think. That looks like a component/accessory of some kind.

The cylindrical thing on the running board? Looks like there's a pipe running from a junction on top to behind the dashboard. Could it be acetylene ("carbide") for the lamps? If so, it'll be a cylinder from some supplier (could the "C" be for "Carbide"?)

Bonnet and radiator shape do suggest Renault. BMC is on a plate on the door as well, suggesting maybe the name of the taxi company.

There was a British Motor Cab company in 1914.

The design is /very/ typical Renault, with the dashboard radiator.
