No Start (Further Diag)

Got my factory service manuals out..... GEEZE Could they make it any harder to find what you are looking for, and how to diagnose it, bouncing between both books... arrgghh

OK Said to check for codes. Got: CODE 41 Ignition Control (IC) Circuit (Open Circuit) Flow Chart starts at Clear DTC Crank for 15 seconds, Does code reset.

Now my first question is clearing codes: Google has conflicting info. Some say disconnect Neg Bat terminal for 10 seconds. Others say disconnect Bat Cable AND turn on headlight switch for 5 to 10 minutes.

After reading more in the CrAzY ass manual I stumbled onto the "DTC section" There is more than one code 41, depending on which "system" is being displayed.

The actual code was H41. Can some> Got my factory service manuals out.....

Geeze, it took a solid hour and a half just to figure out what the "PCM" was and how the connectors and connector pin numbers were determined.

Part of the Diagnostic Flow Chart is to check continuity of a certain pin/wire from the Ignition Control Module to a certain pin/wire on the "PCM". NO PCM in the index or anything like it with the word "Power" (I figured it very well could be an acronym for power or powertrain) I always thought that computer above the battery was the CCM/ECM. Nope.... I accidentally found a pic of it just flipping pages...

Those Service Manuals will make you want to kick your cat!! LOL

I'll let you guys know what I find out.

I find this all fascinating since the last Vette I owned was a 71 454 roadster. Things were far simpler then. Be very interested to see how this all comes out in the end. I would also guess the "dealer" would be clueless and just replace parts until it worked.

The dealer will have the advantage of just pulling a code, then hitting the parts dept till they got something that worked. They can return electrical parts. I'd bet anything they wouldn't do what I'm gonna do. Completely follow the flow charts with multimeters and test lights.

At first I saw clueless on this No Start/OBDII problem. After the last couple days of studying up on the subject, guys here pointing me in the right direction and reading and rereading the manuals, I think I got a handle on it, I'm now kinda excited about tackling this..... If it was an Optispark or turns out to be and OptiSpark problem, I'm not interested in doing it. I've done major teardowns my whole life and now age has taken that enthusiasm away....

Now if it was a 60's Gasser, that would be different. LOL Man I want one of those.... I just love them. Real high, big block 4 speed, straight axle, red tint windows, tunnel ram or injector tubes sticking out of the hood.

I know you said you can smell gas...... Did you try spraying starting fluid in the intake ?

In 2003, when my 2000 C5 was still under warranty, the headlights would sometimes come up, and one would go down, or they would blink - very erratic. Took it in and they replaced the headlight switch stock. Not being a dummy, I tested them and the service manager came out and apologized - nobody tested it after the fix, just "assumed," So he gave me a loaner car and I went back to get it in two days and not being a dummy, tested it and the service manager came out to apologize. Then GM Detroit got involved and they replaced every computer on the car - I got it back, tested it, and it worked. Wonder what that would be out of warranty?

Clueless is the operative word. I found that to he true in early 70s when I had my 454.

Not that I doubt your story but from the repair bill would you list the number on "every computer on the car". I'll help you by starting you out with 10241014. Thanks.

10241014 no longer exist and shows no replacement but assume it is now 10304930. The other items are switches/relays and a drive motor, close to $2,000 worth at their cost. Other than their failure to identify a bad part I'd much rather they change it while they have it tore down. Saves on the broken stuff for multi tear downs.

Oh absolutely. Learned a lot hanging around a top mechanic who owned a one person shop in San Antonio. This guy was also an expert on converting imported sports cars like Ferraris to meet EPA requirements at the time. Also did all my own work on my Honda CB 750-4 and Triumph Bonneville before that.
