Engine Malfunction light on - 2001 Grand Caravan

The orange engine malfunction light came on.

The manual says it could be inferior gas, or something minor; and to ignore it unless it starts flashing. Then it should not be driven.

Any ideas on how safe the car is to drive? I really don't like the idea of getting stuck somewhere. Do they usually go off, or do they usually start flashing? Just filled up Thursday and have most of the tank left. Top off with fresh gas? Argggggggggghhhhhhhhh.

They say if the lite is flashing not to drive it because if your under 8/80 you will destroy the catylitic convertor and then Chrysler will be paying for it.Thats why!!! Me personnally, if the lite is on and stays on have it checked out, Make sure the gas cap is tight, this will cause the lite to come on.

And if the light goes out (as it did after adding a bottle of STP, though that might have been coincidence) it is okay?

Yes coincidental, Keep in mind that if the problem is fixed (such as a loose fuel cap) and you tightend it the problem will go away after so many good trips. A good trip is the engine controller seeing that all monitored system have passed. This will have to occur 2 time before the lite can go off.
