94 dodge van 1 ton overdrive

Hi! Got this 1 ton 94 Dodge van - have it running pretty well now, but if auto tranny isnt within 1 pint of top, overdrive wont kick in , using much more gas. Even when full , it takes 1/2 hour for overdrive to work. Even when hot and stopping for gas , you then need to wait another 1/2 hour for overdrive to kick in ! Any help would be appreciated. thanx, bob snipped-for-privacy@aol.com

shit

ok, pull the pan and look at the part of the linkage that contacts the N-S switch

make sure there is a plastic cover on it everywhere except where it touches in P-R-N

OK - thanx- will pull the pan - is this overdrive external solenoid operated? Wondered if solenoid was accessible and sticking, etc. thanx for all help! bob

there are two solenoids on the RH side of the valve body

easily replaceable

that might be the problem, but check what I said earlier, first

if the plastic coating has come off that part (which would allow starts in drive, by the way), it will fool the ECM into thinking the selector is in 'N' and not allow OD

OK - great - will do asap. thanx, bob

Hi! All items OK in pan - changed fluid and filter, still will not do OD if fluid only low 1 pint or less- with new pan gasket though is not as troubling - thanx for all help! ignatz
