All I got to say is....

We got maybe 6-8 inches of the stuff with winds blowing like hell. Drifts easily as high as the hood of my truck. Spent about 16 hrs yesterday plowing and touching up.

And the best thing was my youngest daughter had a fresh pan of brownies sitting there when I got home.

Hmmmm... sounds like the new toy account just got a boost.

Suddenly, without warning, beekeep exclaimed (2/7/2010 7:06 AM):

Only to the top of the tires? I had to FIND my truck first - our total was 29" on the snow, 23" on the truck - and stuck on all sides. We live in a townhouse, so had to dig ourselves out (no snowblowers, etc). We ran out of places to put the snow - the pile on our postage-stamp size yard is higher than either of us.

My truck isn't even totally uncovered yet, but enough to move it - have to try to get it to the end of the culdesac to remove most of the rest of the snow - it still goes to the shop for the diff tomorrow.

The snow took out one of the big pines yesterday - lay neatly across the exit to our street, completely blocking the way. Big bloody tree. We got some folks together with cutting implements - a hacksaw, couplea handsaws... then found one with a chainsaw (glory be!) so we all tromped down there to take care of the tree. Were about halfway done when the fire department showed up with a bigger chainsaw. Between the firemen and the community folks, quick work was made of the tree. it's still there, but on either side of the road now, rather than across it.

The sour note was some idiot threw all their snow in the middle of the street - effectively blocking even the big 4x4 trucks from getting out. Considering some folks at our end were clearing an entire path through the snow, that was annoying. Fortunately, the bobcat guys showed up before sunset, which was a surprise - usually they don't get to us until

10pm or so.

I have a bit more faith in mankind today. People were helping each other out a lot yesterday, mostly with snow-clearing duties (we'll ignore the street-pilers for the moment). Two feet of snow - and the second bloody two foot storm this year! - is highly unusual 'round here, and a real problem for narrow-street, mostly no garage townhouse communities like ours.

And they're predicting another 4-6" for Tuesday. That would have been a major snow event for this area, if it weren't for the large amount of whiteness here.

Virginia just isn't cut out for this kind of winter. Municipalities had already run through their snow-clearing budget even before this storm. I'd not be surprised if they never get to the "state maintained" road to the highway - they didn't after the 19 Dec storm.

I'm fricking glad, I tire of plowing the stuff. But I see the Union Leader is saying 2 to 5 inches tomorrow... Oh, with a big "Maybe" in front of that prediction!!!

Surprisingly snow has been relatively light this year. Some ground cover, but not that much. Cross-country skiers are complaining that there is not enough on the trails, and snowmobiles are keeping to the lakes a lot of the time.

But, I'm good with that...

No thanks.. I told Nan that I'd live anywhere she wanted, as long as we could afford it and it didn't have snow..

LOL Of course you have to feel sorry for them. Their blood is thin and they're not used to a real winter.

Hey my blood's thick enough - grew up on snow country. I'm even one of the folks that goes out during and shortly after the storms. But this is NOT normal for Virginia - I haven't seen snow like this since I was a kid in NY!

Plus, without The Truck, I'm feeling a bit vulnerable. But at least the car will be easy to clear of snow.

FWIW, on the news they just said that Dulles Airport (one closest to me) has posted the second highest snow totals IN THE NATION this year. And the worse part of the storm's just arriving.

So far (on top of the 29" we got Sat/Sun) there's 7" of new snow, falling at what looks like an inch or two an hour, and winds sustained around 25mph, wind gusts to 44mph.

I think I need to go back north to get away from the snow....

Way back to where? Our postage-stamp yard is already about 6' deep in snow. If I had the Truck, I'd load the bed then drive it to the end of the culdesac and dump it there. Truly, it's getting that bad. My back can't take much more of this - and Hubby and I trade off on the shoveling duties...

Might make some cookies this afternoon. Not sure I'm in the mood though... have Zombieland to watch today :)
