Noisy TD60...

The 1.7TD in my Punto Van has become very noisy. It has been well maintained, full service history and the oil has been changed regularly. It has only covered 43000 miles and in every other respect runs well. My local dealer told me over the phone that the 1.7TD does rattle but I think that this sounds like lifters. Any ideas or suggestions. If it is lifters is this going to be an expensive job? Regards

Replaced the lifters on my car once, its not cheap, but not too expensive to make the car worthless. I had to take the cover off the engine, and replace the lifters sitting on the valves.

Lifters usually go on old cars, very strange that they should go on yours.

In my experience, mechanics are wrong 30% of the time, so get at least three estimates. Dealers are notorious for over charging and lying.

Just got back from an "indie" Fiat and Lancia specialist. I asked them did the engine sound noisy and they said no. They have the same 1.7 TD in their company van and said it was just as noisy, especially when it was cold. I came away thinking that perhaps this is just a noisy Fiat engine. My local Fiat main dealer described the 1.7 TD engine as "sounding like a bag of nails" and this surely does when it is cold. Regards
