1986 IROC 305 4 BBL

I was on the way home today & my IROC suddenly surged & then lost all power. The engine shut down. I cranked her over lots of power for that, but she wouldn't fire up.After I got her back to the garage towed of course, she fired up like it never happened. What the heck was wrong now. I'm checking fuel lines & filters & still no problems even the fuse's are good ?

Anyone have this happen to them ?

Thanks in advance

Had a similar problem with my Corvette a few years back. One of the wires to the fuel pump connection was corroded. Since it wouldn't give proper contact, it would warm up and cut the current to the fuel pump. It would re-start when it would cool off a little.

Hope this helps..Good Luck...

FYI, the carb'ed engines still used a mechanical fuel pump on the side of the engine block.

Okay ! If I looked for a corroded wire off the fuel tank that would be where ? I know where the pump is too. This is the first time it happened I Don't want to go nuts & rip the whole system apart since it has worked for the last 18 years.

Partially correct.....(depending on which engine RPO we're talking about).

The vin G HO 5.0 (if that is what this is) used from what I remember TWO pumps. An in-tank "pusher" pump and a mechanical on the engine.

There are a handful of GM applications that are carbed AND DO use an in-tank pump. GM A bodies with a 3.0 vin code E were 2 bbl Varajets and used an in-tank pump.

Okay I guess I'll check the sending unit in the tank if ones there. Once I check the vin code hopefully it's just something simple.

Thanks Bigfig your right I checked & sure as heck there's a fuel pump in the tank. Now the fun starts LOL. I think next time I'll work on something higher off the ground THE IROC is a bit of low rider to be bending over & getting under. But that's my problem for the weekend.

Thanks In Advance

As I said, I believe you have a mechanical pump on the engine AND an in-tank pump. That's how these were set up from what I remember.

The first time I saw that in a GM parts book, I thought it was an error until I delved into it in more depth.

The 305 Vin G engine through '86 had this scenario. Joe--ASE Certified Parts Specialist & 10th Ann.Club Tech Director '80 Carousel Red Turbo T/A, 27k orig. '79 "Y89" 400/4 speed 10th Ann. T/A, 57k orig '84 Olds 88 Royale Bgm 2 dr, 307 "Rocket" (lol), 143k and still going.... '91 S10 Blazer 4.3Z
