'02 Explorer 4 dr - how to remove radio

This is the factory-installed 6-cd changer. How do I get it out of the dash? It does NOT have the two pairs of holes that accept the DIN removal tools. In fact, it does not have any openings anywhere.

I figure I have to remove either the faceplate of the radio (which appears to be a simple plate with simple holes for the controls and buttons), or I have to remove the larger trim piece that surrounds not only the radio, but the heater controls and center air vents.

Neither of these pieces has any holes, slots, or openings of any kind. Is there a special trool (I'm about to try a putty knife and a dental pick), or do I need to come at it from some other location?

Thanks

There are 2 screws on the bottom of the radio. And you have to remove the trim peice to get to them. I watched them put my radio back in and the guy just pulled the trim peice out. Of course it was easy cause the radio wasn't there so he had an easy way to grab it.

Bill:

The whole plate around the radio and heater controls comes off. You simply pry it out and it will come. I was a little afraid the first time I took mine off. I used a screwdriver at the bottom of the plate not to create any dents in the vinyl. pry a little at numerous locations. Once that's off you will see the bolts that hold the radio in.

Great write up and pictures. Looks like a lot more trouble on the new ones then just sticking the metal fingers in the old style and pulling them out.
