1993 4WD question

A 1993 Explorer (with electronic shift) I will be acquiring shortly is having problems with getting into 4WD. It's been diagnosed by a mechanic, who indicated that it's the control module that's the problem.

Are these parts available anywhere besides a Ford dealer? I'd rather not fork out $350 - $400 for the part, if I can.

In addition, where exactly is that little bugger located in the vehicle? I've found information on the shift motor, but nothing on the shift module itself.

I'd be a little concerned.... the control modules seem to be relatively dependable while the motors seem to have some issues in some climates. A second opinion may be in order... better yet, have the current owner repair the problem and pay him/her for a car that works....
