1993 Explorer 4WD question

1993 Explorer, one day the 4WD is working fine; the next day, it won't engage. The dealer tested the vehicle and says it's the control module; searching the Internet indicates that the shift motor is the most common culprit.

Which would you be most likely to think it is?

I'd vote for the shift motor. If you are a DIYer, it's easy to take apart and clean up and see if that cures it. Or you can buy a new one for about $160 if you hopelessly muck up yours (not likely to happen).

"What, sir, is the use of militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty. . . Whenever Government means to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise a standing army upon its ruins." -- Debate, U.S. House of Representatives, August 17, 1789

Test it first.

Get someone inside trying to engage and disengage 4WD. Lie underneath with a small hammer and gently tap the motor at the rear of the transfer case. This is the on-the-road (or beach) cure and 99% of the time cures it that one time you really need 4WD. If tapping it cures it....... replace the motor (or strip it).
