It's likely going to be the transfer case shift motor - the exactly symptom you describe.
One quick way to fix it at least temporarily may be to get under the truck with a hammer and block of wood and bang on the motor a few times. The motor is located on the back of the transfer case and looks like a big windshield wiper motor. Place the wood across it and bang it pretty hard a few times. Then go press the button. That works every time on my 92, though I only have
71,000 miles. It doesn't fix it permanently, but at least it MAY give you some idea if that your problem.Check the following page and the web site generally for more info on the shift motor and diagnosing 4x4 problems on that model.

This was recently discussed on May 15: 4wd Dash Buttons Not Working...please help a newbie
Of course a bad connection or switch is also a possibility.

This has recently happen to me. My 93 just stopped going into 4wd. In my case the stop on the motor came apart. When you open up the motor you may find white "stuff" that is from the stop. Using fuel tubing I replaced the stop over the metal stud. It sounds simple and it is. It also is hard to believe it works but it does. The computer must know what position the transfer case lever is in all the time.
