4X4lights\Speedometer troubles - Jim Warman

Jim,

I don't know what the "credit card scam" was for your post from back in 2002 - but you indicated that you had a good answer for the problem. I am having the same problem (1995 EB 4X4), with the 4WD lights flashing 6 times, the speedo needle vibrating, and surging in cruise control surging. My dealer (Pacific Ford in Long Beach)pulled the codes and has replaced the speed sensors and the GEM module (not sure if they have replaced the actuator switch yet), with no improvement. They have had my Exploder for a week and seem stumped! Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated (thank you for your enthusiasm and helpfulness for the RAMFE group)

" 2002-11-06 21:56:00 PST was going to answer.... a pretty good answer, too..... but the credit card scam thing kinda sticks, if you know what I mean. I have to wonder how the conversation with the dealer really went....

Date: 2002-11-06 12:24:46 PST I have began to have a couple different problems with my explorer. I took it to the dealer recently to look into the cruise control problem I was having. The vehicle would not stay at a constant speed, it would instead pulse the gas instead of applying it steadily. On the way there, I noticed that the speedometer was also bobbing when not in Cruise. so I figured the instable speedometer was probably the cause of the cruise control pulsing.. only the speedometer wasn't bobbong much at the time...

  • (4WD lights)would blink once every second six times, then would turn off for 5 minutes or so, then repeat the same pattern."

Ahhhh, yes... the original poster had some "issues" with techs and had voiced his opinions rather ungraciously in some other posts. I Googled the chap and found references to misusing credit card information... a little foggy right now but 'old' age can do that.

I don't have my manuals at home right now but (in spite of preparing to leave home yet again) I'll make some time tomorrow to re-aquaint myself with the system and see if we can't come up with a solid diagnostic routine.

Out of curiousity, did you happen to find what the codes retrieved were? This migt help reduce the pain a little.

There were several codes that led them to the transfer case sensors, actuator motor, etc., but were indicating that the codes "were not helping". I believe the current code they believe is relevant is 1886.

They just replaced a "wire harness" and say that they may have fixed the problem. Said they were getting "excessive resistance" of 1.5 ohms across connector "C212F-C282, circuit 772". I am not sure what that wiring is yet, but "less than 1.5 ohms" seems like a very tight tolerance - I am guessng that it must be wiring to the GEM module.

Nine days in the shop! But I guess some of the troubleshooting can be a bear. Service Manager swears he could not find any related TSBs, other messages in the NG elude to one, and related "improved" parts?

I can't find a reference to P1886 in the PC/ED at all...... If you want to e-mail me your VIN (off the NG, of course) I can run OASIS - plugging codes into the symptom fields can help.

As far as the 1.5 ohms across a connector....... It would take one hell of a DVOM and some pretty fancy connections to get too stirred up over that reading. Circuit 772 is rear VSS input, C282 plugs directly into the GEM and C212F is the bulkhead connector at the firewall. As long as these connections are clean and shiny and haven't been spread, they should be good to go. IIRC, these things were notorious for problems in the GEM itself.
