'94 Explorer Sport A/C blower problems

I am experiencing intermittent blower problems with the A/C in my 94 Explorer Sport. Sometimes it wants to work but others (usually the really hot days) it doesn't. Sometimes when I start the engine, it will run then will click off, or vice versa. Other days it works fine until I turn off the engine then when I get back in to start it up, it won't come on. I noticed a few years ago that when my heater was turned on the low fan setting, there was a burning smell. I haven't noticed this in a while and the blower still works on the low setting so I didn't know if this might be associated and perhaps a wire is shorting out. Any thoughts? Is this an easy to get to and inexpensive repair?

You probably need to replace the fan relay. It's under the hood on the passenger side in the fuse/relay box. Replacing the relay fixed the same problem you are having on my '94.

Thanks for the info. There is a mechanic that goes to my church who is going to look at charging up my A/C next week and I'll have him take a look at it too.

Check your blower motor or resistor coils for an open circuit. My 91 EB would only run HI. fix was a defective motor. My 92 XLT had a bad resistor pack. Not too expensive to fix. You can check them with a volt olmmeter.

If you have a manual temp/AC control all I see posted applies. If you have an auto Temp Control System it might cost more. They have a Blower Motor Controller instead of the Resistor voltage droping method. About $100 for a new controller which installs in the same location. Probably will be some wire splicing involved as the controllers sold now need a new connector to connect up older Explorers. Good luck! jerry
