My fan clutch seems to be ok. It wasn't too hard to pull the fan using your directions, although I didn't have to take the belt off to get the fan loose.
Now I need to find the persistant oil leak(s). I think I need to replace both rocker arm cover gaskets as it seems to be leaking from there. That doesn't look like much fun on the passenger side.
Hi Mike--
I'm on th everge of replacing the fan clutch on mine (190K) at about the ame time you are doing the fan only. Since the labor is the same, it might be one of those "while you are in there" jobs.
I'm getting warm just driving up the hill to my house in Glendale, even with new radiator and stuff. No cold-start fan roar any more, and no extra fan noise when it does get hot. So my amateur diagnosis is fan clutch.
A lot of things are coming due all at once on this car. May be time for a new one this year. ;-)

A few weeks ago I needed to replace the water pump on my Explorer, which of course means that the fan has to come off first.
The 1-7/16" nut holding the fan onto my old '91 with 207,000 miles, was sooooo tight that the wrench I "rented" from my local parts store kept bending open which allowed the end of the wrench to just slip around the nut instead of loosening it. This rental wrench was made from 1/4" soft sheet steel which had obviously been stamped out. Luckly I own a small bench top milling machine which I used to make a my own wrench from 5/16" cold rolled sheet steel. It was a lot more work then I wanted to do, but it was the only way I could get the nut to loosen up.
Hope you both have much better luck then I did.

I used a pair of Channel-Lock pliers and that got it loose.
Mike--
I did the rocker gaskets and I think there's still a write-up on Jeff's site. Kind of a chore on the pass side, but patience will win out. I spent more time finding the right gaskets than actually changing them, though. Got the metal-and-silicone ones from NAPA. No problems since.
