95 Explorer OD light Flashing / Transmssion Problem ??

My 1995 4.0 V6, 4X4, the OD switch just started blinking on the dash without any warning. The engine and transmission was running fine. The lite just came on, and I noticed the RPM is running high when shifting into 2nd gear. If I accelerate and then take my foot off the gas, it's shifts easily into 2nd gear. All the other gears are fine. This hard shifting into 2nd gear, just started after the OD switch started blinking on the dash without warning. I bought an OBD1 code reader and found the following codes: Engine OFF, Ignition ON: Code 646 - Incorrect Gear Ratio obtaind for 2nd Gear - Second Gear failure. Engine Running : Code 632 - O/D Cancel switch, Overdrive cancel switch did not change state during KOER.

I disconnect the battery for 2 minutes and then reconnect it and the OD blinking light went out. I drove the car and it shifted fine in all the gears even 2nd, however, about 30 minutes into the driving I went up a steep hill and turned to go down another hill and the OD started blinking ( about 25-30 MPH). I disconnected the battery again and manually turn of the OD using the OD/switch on the Gear shift and the transmisson shifts fine. Question: 1) Why is the OD switch keep comming on 2) What do I need to do to correct these two codes listed above

3) Should I put a new transmission in? I call a Ford dealer and explained the problem, and without even looking at the truck, the Svc Writer advise, whenever the OD switch starts blinking, it's a serious transmisson problem, which would require them to GO INTO THE TRANSMISSION. I was quoted a price for a "fix" - new transmison - $2500.00 -$3000.00. Note: Before the OD started blinking, the transmisson was running FINE.

4) How bad is it to drive with the OD switch manually turned OFF below 40 MPH and then manually turning it on over 40 MPH, using the gear shift OD/ button? If there is a 2nd gear issue, the OD would still kick in over 40 MPH?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance for your assistance." (You may always add more later

Had the same problem earlier this year. Took my 95 Explorer to the dealer and got the same schpiel, only the quote they gave me was 3,000 - 3,500 for a "rebuilt" transmition. Oh, and I also needed a new master cylindar to boot. I decided to farm the work out myself by finding a small shop that specializes in rebuilding transmissions. They did a great job of expaining the problem, ran a computer diagnostic as well as a drive test. The final outcome was the transmission needed to be rebuilt. No way around it I'm afraid. Needless to say the job came out as quoted $2,500 and I got a transmission oil cooler as part of the installation. Something that Ford didn't even offer.

I farmed the master cylindar work out to a small shop specializing in Explorer repairs

they changed out the master cylindar andfound and repaired several small maintenance problems (problems the dealerdidn't even mention) for under 1,000. Well worth the time given the savings. Iwould have spent over 4,000 with Ford for the same repairs. Reccomend replacing the transmission. It is only going to get worse and could start to impact other system in the drive train.

My 2 cents.

Hey Cecil,

Don't give up the ship yet. Best to do a google search for flashing o/d light and you will find 1000+ posts relating to this. Sometimes the fix is as simple as a axle speed sensor (which can be done by a novice mechanic)

Check it out.

I have a 95 Explorer 4WD and on the weekend the speedometer went out. I started looking at this list, then realized that my vehicle's OD light was flasing as well. This morning I was on my way to the local tranny shop and the car died on me at an intersection. I put it park (mistake) and it started it right back up. However, I couldn't get it out of park. 85 bucks later for a tow that was less than a 1/4 mile my vehicle is sitting in the tranny shop parking lot.

More to follow...
