Auto Warranty History

Does anyone here remember when the major manufacturers went from a 12/12 warranty to a 36/36? I know my parents bot a 1982 Mercury Zephyr (Ford Fairmont clone) because it had an unheard of 24/24 warranty that was a special promotion at the time. I also remember buying a Mercedes 190 in 1983 that and the 48/50 warranty that is similar to today's warranties on luxury cars. But when did Ford, for instance, make the 36/36 standard on all vehicles? I am guessing about 20 years ago but am not sure.
