Changing brake pads - What about ABS ??

I have a '98 XLT, and want to change my brake pads. I was told that on cars with ABS there is a special way to insert the new pads because if you push in the cylinders it puts fluid into the ABS system and can ruin it. Is this true?? Is changing the pads difficult ? I used to do it on my old Volvo all the time, and the only problem I ever ran into was squeal.

What about rotors ? Do they need to be turned when pads are replaced?

Thanks for help, Allen

I just did all 4 wheels on my 99 XLT with some great advice from this NG. As long as your fluid is not contaminated, it will not affect the ABS system. Just remember to take off the master cylinder cap while you are pushing the pistons back so the fluid has somewhere to go. Push the pistons slowly with a c-clamp and keep an eye on the master cylinder so fluid will not overflow out. If you need to, take a turkey baster and take some fluid out. Push the pistons back enough to install the new pads. You should not push them all the way back unnecesarily. As far as cutting the rotors, if they are in good shape with no grooves, just leave them. Ford does not even recommend cutting them. I did not cut mine and the brakes work great.

Thanks for the advice, what kind of pads did you use? Did you need any other products like anti-squeal, shims, or lithium grease for them??

I used Bendix. I did not use any shims or grease.

Try using ceramic, a bit more costly but WELL worth the investment..

I'll look around for them, do most parts shops carry them for the XLT's ??
