HELP, OD light flashing w/only 68k miles?

Today I started my truck as usual, shifted to reverse then glanced down at the instruments, I noticed the OD light was flashing. I retuned to Park and restarted the vehicle, the light disappeared. I then tested the OD button and it worked fine as normal. I had the windows down at the time and the tranny did make a louder noise/movement when shifting into reverse (the 1st time), sounded like when the transfer case shifts into 4wd low. Does the computer store codes for the OD light? (If so I could bring to AutoZone) Should I be worried? BTW the vehicle is a 1997 SOHC V6 5spd automatic w/68k miles. I was going to drop into Brake Masters anyways(4 the brakes) to be checked out, I will be driving to Colorado from AZ next week and they squeal like hell.(dusty AZ?) Any help is greatly appreciated, Joe

Today I went to AutoZone and they found no codes. The man thought the O/D light flashing would not store any codes that could be read with a OBD scanner. He said "bring it to the dealer" I know that will cost me... Any ideas, is this just a fluke event? (never came back on) I don't want to drive out of state and make a small thing big. Thanks again

Try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes. If it comes back you most likely have to get it serviced.

A few weeks ago, I drove my '95 Explorer XLT through some high water. The OD light started flashing continuously soon after and I also noticed that the transmission was shifting harshly. I feared the worst since the vehicle has over 128,000 miles.

Last night, I disconnected the ground terminal on the battery and let the vehicle sit over night. This morning, I reconnected the battery and started the engine. No OD light flashing. I drove around town for an hour or so and the transmission seems to be working just fine.

I'm guessing that the high water shorted out a connector on the transmission which set an error code. It took disconnecting the battery for that error code to reset.
