I'm bugged

I always had problems with spiders getting into my '94 EB. Now I have an '03 XLT and I'd like to avoid this happening again. I was never sure if they were getting into the car through the air vents or somewhere else. In my owner's manual (page 31 & 34) under "Climate Controls" and "Operating Tips", there is the following line: "Under normal weather conditions, do not leave the air flow selector in MAX A/C or OFF when the vehicle is parked. This allows the vehicle to "breathe" using the outside air inlet vents."

This seems backwards to me. If the selector is set for MAX, wouldn't the outside air inlets be closed instead of open? I'm trying to close up the possible inlet points to keep these little buggers OUT of my car. Does anybody here know if the OFF position (or MAX) will seal me off from the outside world....mostly?

The manual may be a little confusing... The line quoted is telling you that leaving the selector in those positions will NOT let fresh air circulate. The "This" in the quoted part refers to NOT leaving the selector set to MAX A/C or OFF. MAX A/C and OFF will set the air flow to NOT let fresh air in, just as you thought.

Thanks Bill. Obviously, that line WAS a little "cumbersome". I'll try using the OFF position to keep the little buggers out of my vents from now on. Even with this lack of clarity, the Ford manual reads like it was written in English originally and not translated like most of the manuals I get these days!

Glad I could help.

Be aware, though, that MAX A/C and OFF only shut off the air at the airbox under the dash. Switching to any other mode will let anything that entered while the truck was sitting can then enter the inside. IOW, ther may not be much that will actually solve your problem other than changing where you park. Here in Phoenix, we've never had a problem with little bugs getting inside while parked (and it's not always 100+ here, either! :-) ).
