Location of outside air temp sensor on 1996 ford explorer xlt

The problem I have is: the factory installed outside air temp gauge does not work after the front end was repaired from a minor front end collision. It reads -40 all the time. I am only guessing there is some kind of sensor on the outside of the vehicle. Maybe not. I appreciate all the help and information anyone can offer for this problem.

First check for wire damage. There is a wiring harness that may be damaged in the accident. There are two climate air temp sensors on this vehicle one for the electronic A/C and one for The console. They are on the same harness. If it just started reading incorrectly (like mine) the sensor would be bad. In your case check all wiring.

Yeah, I'm familar with this one - I have the exact same truck. The sensor feeds the overhead console. It is located around the front radiator support. You may find it by opening the driver headlight door under the hood and looking down. It looks like a very short cigar held in with a pushclip. The part number is E4LY-15A022-AA , dealer only item. Check parts.com under ford for the dealer who has it at lowest cost - its about $23-24 + a few bucks for shipping.

Oh and dont confuse it with the A/C air temp sensor, that one has a point with plastic "threads", they are sometimes very close to each other.

Lenny, Thanks for the very good information. I didn't find the actual sensor, but I did find a cut wiring harness is the exact area you mentioned. It has two wires, (blue/white & blue/yellow) and nothing else. The sensor and connector must have been lost in the collision or the repair. With the part number you gave me, I can get a new sensor and connector to make the repair.

On your second message, I didn't really understand about the A/C air temp sensor. Where is it located and what does it do? Does it control the air conditioner? Thanks again. Norm

Norm, There should be two sensors when you look down the headlight door. One is for the console, and one helps control the automatic temperature system. They have very different wires and connectors. It seems they may be missing in your case...
