O2 sensor questions.

I brought my '98 Mountaineer to Auto Zone to diagnose my check engine light and was told that my O2 sensor on my second zone was bad. He told me it may have been a result of the weather (cold and snowy) in the north east. He then 'erased' the problem and told me to bring it to the dealer if the light came back on. Is this a safe plan or will I only be making things worse? Can I replace it myself with the truck on ramps? If I bring it to a local garage how much should I expect to pay for the repair?

Without knowing what the exact code was, I'm going to suggest waiting for the light to return and have it diagnosed by a real person. We just came off a week of

-40°C and worse, coupled with a hefty dose of freshly fallen and we've had zip for O2 sensor troubles..... There are too many different O2 sensor codes, some of them indicating non-O2 sensor concerns.

And I'm really not sure what he meant by "second zone"....

Thanks guys. The light had already gone back on when I originally posted. My fiance had it and I got a call a few minutes after posting. I brought it back to Auto Zone to see what they meant by zone and this guy did say it was the O2 sensor in 'bank' 2. My mechanic can't see it until next Wednesday though. Is this an easy fix?

There are two O2 sensors on each bank..... without the actual code retrieved, we are still flying blind. One sensor is upstream of the catalytic convertor and is used for fuel trim adjustments. The other sensor is downstream from the convertor and is basically a catalytic convertor monitor. There are many things that can influence the performance of either sensor.

It is an easy fix but only with the information required, and the necessary training and/or knowledge. Sorry, Jimbo... there's still not enough info to even offer up a guess...
