oil filter question

Can I purchase a filter longer and with more filter media that Motorcraft's 820S oil filter. My 4.6, V8, uses the 820S but I have room for a much larger filter, larger than the FL1A as used by my old V6. I do not need an oil cooler or remote add on filter just looking for a little better filter. 2004 with 4.6 V8. I have asked Ford and they just look at you and ask, why?

Thanks

"Why" is a good question. The system is designed to use a particular filter; pressure, flow rates and other characteristics are designed with that filter in mind. The stock filter will filter very (I'd say "perfectly", but for sure someone would complain) well, and well within the design requirements for the vehicle. Changing the filter model may well alter the characteristics in ways never considered by the engineers, and can damage the engine. IOW, not a good idea. The oil lubrication system is something you don't want to muck with without good reason.

Back in the day, Chevy had a car filter and a truck filter for the small blocks. They were the same except the car filter was a half quart and the truck was 1 quart. Most everyone I knew opted for the truck filter, regardless of the vehicle because of the extra filtering capacity. H

Ask Wix if they can interchange a larger filter.

I remember using a truck filter in place of my FL1A and it was the same only longer. The FL1A is 3/4-16 and the 820S is 22MM. I have taken the

820 apart and not much to it.
