OT 94 Escort problem

Guess this is posed for resident Ford guru Jim Warman. 94 Escort 1.9, 5 speed, 140K well-maintained miles. Going to dealer Wednesday to find out what the "metallic chirping noise" that the engine started making is. It changes with rpm change, thought it might be drive-belt related, but it appears to be coming from the top end, belt system sounds normal. Timing belt was changed a couple years ago (water pump while they were at it). Clutch in or out, makes no difference. Car has plenty of power, still gets

33mpg. Anyway, just wondering if you may have any idea what it could be? Thanks!

FWIW, tech diagnosed as worn pilot bearing, also recommended clutch, pressure plate, release bearing,....$800 for a car that's worth $315....oh well, Escort gets donated to the Kidney Foundation, and a 2000 Ranger XLT

4X4 joins the family. Nice truck, good price, we're a total 4X4 family now ('cept for the old '66 Beetle).
