speedometer cable noise?

'97 Explorer XLT V6 SOHC (130+k)

There has been a periodic sqeaking noise coming from the driver's side dash board area for the past several years. The noise is tied to the speed of the car and tends to be much worse at highway speed but also is present whenever the car is moving. I was told awhile back that it was the speedometer cable. But they couldn't lube it to make that noise stop or lessen. Has anyone else experienced this and can enlighten me on what is the problem. Also, what would it take to fix this and would it be expensive? Thanks. derek

Kind of hard to guess what it could be without hearing it, but I can tell you that it ISN'T the Speedometer cable, since your truck does not HAVE a speedo cable !

Well, not a mechanical one anyway. The speedo is electronic so there isn't a flexible shaft like the old days that could be yanked greased, and slapped back in (after accidentally letting it touch the upholstry ;) )

Could be just a loose piece of plastic on the dash. Door hinges, Suspension, bushings Brakes, ....
