Timing chain life on 4.0 V6

What is the life of the timing chain on a 1997 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6? This is the standard engine not the SOHC that I am asking about. My Explorer has 190K miles on it.

I asked the dealer this and they said 'lifetime', of course they weren't counting on the amount of miles I was putting on it - 227K at the moment. Pretty amazing, seeing as I have to change my chain on my mountain bike every 6 months to a year due to stretch.

Not really. The timing chain is in the controlled enviroment of a constant oil bath with a constant light load on it. Your bike chain gets abused worse both from a mechanical stress and environmental standpoint. I don't think the timing chaion would last that long if you tossed a handfull of mud in the crankcase every now and then... ;-)

PS - You do know that chains don't really stretch, even though we all say that to indicate they are worn. They actually get longer because each of the bearings that make up the link pivots wear and become slightly looser. They all add up to increase the end to end length.
