91 t-bird auto trans

A little piston or plunger and an o-ring was in the bottom of the auto trans oilpan. No other hardware (springs, retainers, etc) were in the pan. The plunger and o-ring was found before removing the filter. What are they and where did they come from? Any help?

They are the remains of shipping plugs. During production the dip stick is installed after the transmission and body are mounted on the assembly line. They live happily in the pan for years.

And it might also mean that since they are still there no one has ever dropped the pan and changed the filter before you got there. Steve
