'93 Continental - 2 Problems..

Hello all,

I'm having two problems with my '93 Continental. The first, when you turn the ignition key to the first position and all the instruments light up, the engine check light comes on along with the check charging system light. When the car is started and running, and you select the battery/charging system gauge in the message center everything appears normal, should I worry about this?

Also, 90% of the time on the freeway when take your foot off the gas pedal and allow the car to coast, the check engine light comes on and beeps several times then goes off. If you keep your foot on the gas and don't allow the car to coast this doesn't happen. Anyone have idea's on why this is happening?

Thanks, Martin.

Do you mean those lights come on, with ignition on but before you start the car? I have never seen a car that didnt do it that way... it's how you check the warning systems. But I suppose there must be one somewhere that doesnt do it that way.

Could be any of a number of things... I would suspect the EGR system but dont hold me to that.

Call around and see if any local part stores can read out the diagnostic codes in your car.

All the lights come on then go off, then the check engine light and charging system lights come on by themselves and both continue to flash until you start the car. I didn't explain it too clearly the first time.

Thanks, Martin.

The first is normal, just checking bulbs. The CEL coming on may be EGR or O2 sensors detecting lean. Get the codes read; that's what the onboard diagnostic system is for.

Did you read my second post? This isn't normal at all....

That sounds like it could be perfectly normal. The CEL flashing would be odd but if it goes out when you start the car it seems its ok. Is that "check engine" light yellow or red? Does it actually say "check engine" on the light? If not, what does the symbol look like? Get the code read. see if its got a memory code and report back, or just get it fixed. The check engine light comming on when the car is running is never normal but it is probably something simple (for an auto tech) to fix.

They both flash together at the same time....
