I hope you are not continuing to drive that car. That knock you hear are the mains running without sufficient oil pressure

I haven't myself - but I wouldn't run that car AT ALL before checking the oil supply, and hooking up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and seeing if the pressure is really low, or it's only the dashboard gauge being wonky.

And if the mechanical gauge doesn't move, shut it down again fast.

When in doubt, this is the kind of problem you get the car towed to the shop. Engines are expensive.

Mike's right. The oil keeps the bearings away from the crankshaft, perhaps by 0.01". When the oil isn't there, there is contact between the bearing an crankshaft. Soon the bearings will be worn badly and you will be replacing them (or the car).

Make sure you have enough oil. It may be that the engine is so worn that the oil just flows between the bearings and the crankshaft that the oil pump can't pump enough oil to keep oil between the bearings and crankshaft.

You may also have a clogged pickup on the oil pump (the thing that sucks up the oil in the oil pan and carries it to the oil pump) or you may have a clogged filter. Whatever it is, you need to find it and fix it.
