Several years ago Ford went back to rear drums ands single exhaust on the base Taurus and dropped the base price by $1,000 for marketing purposes since competitors vehicle had rear drums.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
The 99's have rear drums. As for the exhaust issue, all Duratec's made after November of 98 had a single exhaust.
This lowered the hp to 185 until Ford made a larger single side unit for the 2000 model that brought the hp back up to the original 200. Fortunately mine was made in October of 98 so I've got the two pipe version.
The base Vulcan engine AFAIK has always had a single pipe.
