disable passive anti-theft in 97 mercury sable

Does anyone know how to disable the passive anti-theft device in a 97 mercury sable? If I use the power door lock or key fob to lock the doors then there's a very good chance that the alarm will go off before I return to the car from shopping/eating/whatever. If I manually lock the doors when I leave, then there's no problem. I really couldn't care less about anti-theft system, add to that the fact that it doesn't work right and I'd be fine with it gone completely. So, any ideas how to completly disable or remove it?

Thanks!

Well, you had to ask...

This is not PATS. It's PATAS. It's just an alarm.

1997 Sable Anti-Theft System:

The perimeter anti-theft alarm system provides the vehicle with protection from unauthorized entry into the passenger compartment, engine compartment and luggage compartment. If triggered, the system provides both audio and visual alarm signals.

The system is controlled by a remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module. The remote anti-theft personality module also controls the electronic door lock control system functions. Anti-theft system functions are:

l perimeter sensing: doors, luggage compartment door/liftgate, hood

l indicator flashing when system is armed

l perimeter alarm

When armed, unauthorized entry into the vehicle is detected by a hood switch or luggage compartment door lock tamper switch and the door ajar switches.

l The hood switch is monitored directly by the remote anti-theft personality module.

l The door ajar switches are monitored by the generic electronic module (GEM).

l The GEM signals the remote anti-theft personality module when a door is ajar (opened).

l If the anti-theft system is armed, this signal will cause the RAP module to activate the alarm.

l The door ajar signal will also prevent arming of the system if a door or liftgate is not fully closed.

Once triggered, the system flashes the low beam headlamps, the parking lamps, the alarm indicator, and sounds the horn.

Enabling and Disabling Features:

The enable/disable mode allows the assembly plant and service technician (if the incorrect configuration is suspected) to set the alarm configuration of the remote anti-theft personality module to match the laws for alarm operation in the country where the vehicle is to be driven (refer to Worldwide Alarm Configurations Chart). The enable/disable mode also allows the owner to enable/disable the autolock.

l The alarm configurations shown in the following chart are set by the assembly plant for regulations in the expected destination and should not be modified for use in countries other than as listed in this table.

l The remote activated PANIC alarm will share the exterior lamps and horn characteristics.

l The panic alarm will turn on interior lamps in all cases for 25 seconds.

l Alarm Triggers means the number of times the anti-theft system can trigger between disarm events. Locations not listed are assumed to use North America standards. The enable/disable mode is entered when the following series of steps occurs:

Note: Steps 3 through 6 must be executed within 30 seconds of turning ignition switch to RUN in Step 2.

  1. Make sure that the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered (See Disarming Triggered or Untriggered System), ignition switch is OFF and all doors are closed.

  1. Turn ignition switch from OFF to RUN.

  2. Press door power UNLOCK button three times.

  1. Turn ignition switch from RUN to OFF.

  2. Press door power UNLOCK button three times.

  1. Turn ignition switch back to RUN within 30 seconds of Step 2.

If the remote anti-theft personality module has successfully entered enable/disable mode it will lock and then unlock all doors. While in the enable/disable mode, the remote anti-theft personality module will not have any other functionality except enabling/disabling features.

The following sequence will toggle the feature to either the enabled or disabled state, opposite of its current state. Enabling a new alarm configuration will automatically disable the previous alarm configuration.

  1. Press the door power UNLOCK button the number of times associated with the feature you wish to enable or disable as shown below: DOOR POWER UNLOCK BUTTON ENABLE/DISABLE FEATURES ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ? ³ Number of ³ Enable/Disable Feature ³ ³ Unlock Presses ³ ³ ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ? ³ 1 ³ Autolock/Relock ³ ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ? ³ 5 ³ North America/Gulf Coast/Korea Alarm ³ ÃÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ? ³ 6 ³ Europe/Australia Alarm ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÁÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

  1. Press the door power LOCK button once after pressing the last UNLOCK in order to enter the enable/disable code. The system will confirm the altered feature by chirping the horn the same number of times as the number of unlock presses registered. An additional long horn honk will follow after the horn chirps if the feature has been enabled. No horn honk will follow the horn chirps if the feature was disabled.

  2. After a horn chirp sequence has occurred in the enable/disable mode, another enable/disable sequence may be performed.

  1. To exit enable/disable mode, turn ignition switch OFF (or allow five minutes to pass after entering enable mode). Upon exiting, the system will confirm the exit with a honk chirp if a feature has been changed.

For example, if the vehicle being serviced is being sent to Europe for the summer, the customer may request that the perimeter alarm be configured for European laws.

To do this:

(1) Confirm that perimeter alarm is disarmed.

(2) Enter the vehicle and sit in driver seat.

(3) Confirm that all doors are closed and that the ignition switch is OFF.

(4) Note: Steps a through e MUST happen within 30 seconds.

a. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN.

b. Press the power door lock UNLOCK button three times.

c. Turn the ignition switch from RUN to OFF.

d. Press the power door lock UNLOCK button three times.

e. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN.

(5) Verify that the remote anti-theft personality module LOCKS then UNLOCKS all doors. This indicates that the remote anti-theft personality module is now in the enable/disable mode and ready to accept program changes.

(6) Press the power door lock UNLOCK button five times to command the remote anti-theft personality module to toggle the North America alarm configuration OFF.

(7) Press the power door lock LOCK button once to enter the command.

(8) Verify that the vehicle horn "chirps" five times to signal remote anti-theft personality module confirmation of the command.

(9) Press the power door lock UNLOCK button six times to command the remote anti-theft personality module to toggle the European alarm configuration ON.

(10) Press the power door lock LOCK button once to enter the command.

(11) Verify that the vehicle horn "chirps" six times to signal remote anti-theft personality module confirmation of the command. Verify also the one longer "honk" to indicate that the remote anti-theft personality module has enabled the commanded feature.

(12) Turn the ignition switch OFF to exit the enable/disable mode.

(13) Exit the vehicle and verify that the remote anti-theft personality module "chirps" the horn once to indicate that a feature has been changed.

The remote anti-theft personality module will now be configured for European requirements.

The autolock and the appropriate alarm configuration are turned on at the factory. The remote anti-theft personality will keep its enabled/disabled settings any time battery positive voltage (B+) is disconnected and reconnected to the remote anti-theft personality module.

Rob,

Those are some amazing instructions. I followed them as best I could but ran into a couple minor discrepancies from what your instructions said and what actually happened, here's what I did:

When I got into the enable/disable mode, rather than the system locking and then unlocking to indicate it was in the enable/disable system, it chirped once.

When I pressed the unlock button 5 times, and then the lock once, it chirped

5 times (like it was supposed to) and then did the long honk. According to the instructions, a long honk indicates that the feature was enabled. So, I entereted the code again and once again, it chirped five times and then a long honk at the end. I exited the enable/disable system (and was verified by a single chirp), then re-entered the enable/disable section (Again, I was greeted with a chirp) and proceeded to press the unlock button 5 times again followed by 1 lock press. Just like before, it chirped five times and then a long honk at the end. It's like the system was telling me what it was set to, but wasn't letting me change it.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks!

Door open? Door open switch malfunctioning?

It seems unlikely that a door sensor isn't working properly because when I open the door, the lights come on as expected and turn off as soon as the door is shut. Also, I tested the alarm by locking the door (while the car was off) with me in it and then opening the door from the inside, and sure enough, it went off.

To answer your other question, all the doors were closed and the hood/trunk were latched the entire time I was working on the enable/disable system.

One thing in the instructions that did catch my eye, it stated that using the system a technician could enable/disable the security settings, and the owner could enable/disable the auto-lock. Is it possible that without doing some further actions to let it know I'm a technician, that it's limiting me to only be able to enable/disable the auto-lock system?

Sorry I don't have an answer for you but I do agree with your plight

Why can't we have options to bypass or disable functions we don't need or want.

Like auto-down windows, what idiot thought this option up?

or the "check engine" system, it basically teaches people to ignore it.

PATS ignition keys, another arrogant system I don't need or want . . . .

Of course that really what's this country has come to, sheeplessly giving up freedoms our forefathers fought so hard to provide.

If you don't think we're giving up our freedoms just go through airport security!

Good luck dude, your onboard computer(s) controls these things so you'll have to "trick" into believing all is fine . . . .
