Fuel rail leak

I have a 1999 Windstar that had a rusty spot near the regulator that started spraying gas all over the engine .The repair at a ford dealer cost $480 bucks .Anyone else have this problem .It should be a recalled item. I haven't found anything yet about a recall

Why do you htink there should be a recall? As far as I can tell this is not a common problem. Do you feel that any failure on a 6+ year old vechile should be the grounds for a recall? Did you performed the recommended multi-point inspecition every 5000 miles? Did the line rust from the inside out, or outside in? Are you in an area that has a lot of salt on the roads? Any battery problems that might have casued the fuel lie corrosion? Some failures are just random becasue of enviromental or other factors beyond the control of the manufacturer. Do you feel they are responsible for those? Did you consider buying the extended warranty?

$480 sounds like a lot to repair a fuel line. Can you provide a break down of the charges? I assume you had to pay for a diagnosis ($75 - $100), a new line ($30-$100), maybe a new regulator ($40), labor ($100), shop charges ($25), probably a fuel filter ($25), tax ($25). It seems to be $320-$415 job to me. What was the extra $65+ for?

I had a similar problem with my Dodge Intrepid several years ago, which WAS a "silent" recall thing. I found out AFTER my engine caught fire.

A few things to consider... Some defects aren't talked about until a number of people are dead as a result. They call it "acceptable" losses. Remember how long it took to recall the bad tires that caused so many SUV's to loose control and flip?

Then again, $480.00 isn't a tragic cost, and unless it's a very common thing, you'll be hard pressed to get any positive results.

There isn't a lawyer in the country that would pay an ounce of attention to a $480 claim, so don't even consider that.

The Ford dealer can look it up very quickly and tell you if there was a recall
