history of 2005 Mustang GT engine?

Is the V-8 in the new 2005 Mustang GT a brand new engine design, or an improvement to one that's been around for years?

Any thoughts on its long-term reliability?

Thanks in advance.

It is a development of the modular family. I believe the block is similar to the 4.6L block introduced for use in

2002 Explorers. The three valve heads are the same as the ones first used on 2004 F150 5.4L engines. The combination of the 3 Valve heads and the aluminum 4.6L block were new to the Mustang. The power output (300 Hp) is the same as the 5.4L in the F150s. The maximum torque is less.
