Mercon 5 vs. Mercon 3 ???

My daughter has a '99 Ford F150 4x4 that leaked out about 2 or 3 quarts of ATF because of a leak in the cooler line. A repair garage was very nearby when she noticed the leak and they repaired the line and topped off the tranny, but used Mercon 3. I looked at the dipstick and it says Mercon 5. Should all the tranny fluid be flushed and refilled with Mercon 5 ASAP ?

I'm not really familiar with Fords, but if it's like my Dodge (which needs ATF+4 only), I figure that Mercon 3 better come out of there. Right ?

Mercon V is a full synthetic trans fluid while Mercon III is not. If the garage only added 3 quarts you will be ok since the vehicle is a 4X4 and holds about 14 quarts.

The repairing garage should come good on this one.... It is difficult to say if this amount of contamination would lead to an early demise of the transmission, but the truth of the matter is that someones oversight has resulted in a concern... and that party is liable for the resolution.

By all means, have the system returned to as close to normal as possible. If the shop performing the mistake doesn't come right on fixing the mistake, tell everyone you know in no uncertain terms.
