Moonroof stuck on 2005 Eddie Bauer Explorer

We have had a host of electrical issues with our 2005 Explorer. We have had to replace the heater/AC fan. We have had an intermittant left front speaker with the stereo. We also lost power to our rear lights. But, most painful has been the failure of our moonroof.

We have already had the moonroof motor replaced. That seemed to fix the roof for 6 months or so. But, now it will tilt up and down. However it will not retract. The dealer says it is a track failure and will run ~1000 to fix. Has anyone else had failures with a recent model year explorer moonroof? Can this be fixed outside the dealer? Is this possibly a do it yourself repair?

Wouldn't that be covered under warranty, or has yours expired?

OTOH, I would imagine that you would have to pull the headliner to get to the complete mechanism. After looking at it, I would think that it would depend on your mechanical/electrical expertise as to whether or not it's a DIY repair. Most body shops could probably fix it, but I wouldn't even venture a guess if it would cost more or less than the dealer- it would probably depend on what kind of rapport you have with the local repair shops. Good luck to you!

I'll second that, where's the warranty on a 2005. And with your warranty list, have you considered an extended warranty yet?
