question about 1997 ford taurus transmission

When you come to a stop and then accelerate the transmission sometimes slips. It will finally kick in and go. Any ideas why? Deborah

Well it's my brother-in-laws car and he is going to take it to a transmission shop on Tuesday if nobody else has any ideas. Thanks Deborah

Hey Deborah, I had one that I used as a commuter for awhile. Loved the little beast because It was a beater. Mine did the same thing. The tranny died completely not too long after that. The transmissions in those cars is their weak point. The quote I got to replace the tranny was something like $1200 - I'd only paid $500 for the car, so I junked it.

I have know others that this has happened to as well. The trannys are just weak.

He could have them check tehe transmission filter and see if it's boogered up but my guess is that he should be prepared for a transmission transplant. Oh, and if he does it, don't go used, for obvious reasons.

Thanks Kate, I think he realizes he needs a new tranny but is hoping for a miracle solution. I promised to ask. Deborah

I hear ya! I hated to junk my commuter. It saved allot of wear and tear on my baby, but, the cost was prohibitive.

Best of luck to him!

what reason pick up a used tranny for 100 $$

even if it only lasts 6 months its much cheaper than a new car payment

$100? like your going to find a good one at a late model salvage yard for that. Its a little new for a u pull it yard.

Even then, its the labor. What do you think its going to cost to have it removed and put back? $100? I doubt it. You want to go to all the trouble for a unknown condition trannie? Better odds at the casino......

As to the other posts $1200 rebuilt figure. Shops may bait you with that, but i will bet your out the door price installed is more like $1800 to $2000 at an independent shop. At the ford dealer? Maybe old Hurc will tell you how much you have to bend over.

My thoughts exactly

That was pretty much what I thought. The value of the car was only half of what it would have cost to replace the tranny. After that, it was more likely than not it would continue to decline. Why throw good money after bad.

There is never ONE answer to that question. If the car is in good shape and the motor is good, it would be hard to get something equivalent for $2000. But if the body is trashed, interior is trashed and the motor is making noise, a no fix may be the better solution.

The car was in overall terrific condition. Interior and exterior. The thing that really made me decide to get rid of it was that the heate core developed a leak right about the same time. We had a look at it and wow.. whatta mess.
